How has Billie Eilish suddenly become so popular?

Billie Eilish is a unique character.
She’s pretty young—about 17 years old— but has the talent to reach high ranks on Billboard, Spotify, iTunes, etc. She also collaborates with her brother on almost all of her songs; they both are truly a power duo. The way she dresses (large, baggy clothing) is also pretty iconic.
But let’s talk about her music. Her singing style is not what you’d expect out of a female hip-hop artist. She literally never belts. She usually hangs around at the falsetto range, singing rather quietly, but still effectively. But Billie’s singing is good enough to not need auto-tune (unless she’s trying to convey some robotic, musical effect). All in all, her unique voice is what makes her recognizable and popular.
I think her willingness to step outside of the hip-hop norms in vocal technique, instrumentation and lyricism is why she’s a very popular artist today. She’s still young, though, and she has a lot to learn. But with a hell of a start early into her career, I trust that she’ll go far.

BB24 2017 - DO NOT USE

Los Angeles upstart Billie Eilish was just 13 years old when she uploaded her woozy love song "Ocean Eyes" to Soundcloud, only to see it go viral almost overnight. Two years later, the song joins a host of other gloom-pop jams as part of Eilish's debut EP, dont smile at me.
While on tour to promote the album, the burgeoning star took a moment with Billboard to talk breaking rules and breaking through.
GO-GETTER Homeschooled by actor/musician parents, Eilish (pronounced “eye-lish”) was taking dance classes and singing in the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus by 8 years old. With help from her older brother Finneas, a budding producer, she wrote her own songs for choreography. “I was always singing. People had to shut me up,” she says. “I’m still like that.”
BREAKTHROUGH She began to make moves at 13 with the moody “Ocean Eyes,” which she uploaded to SoundCloud to share with her dance teacher. The song went viral overnight and now has over 19 million Spotify plays. “Everything came to me at once,” says Eilish, who signed to Darkroom/Interscope in November 2016. “I just beamed [with] joy.”

If you haven't heard of 17-year-old singer Billie Eilish — or at least seen any of her creepy music videos — you might want to fire up Spotify or Apple Music, because it needs some updating. Things haven't really slowed down for the Los Angeles native since she garnered widespread attention with the release of her 2016 track "Ocean Eyes" and 2017 debut EP, Don't Smile at Me. She's collaborated with other major artists, including Khalid and Vince Staples, and recently confirmed that she's teaming up with 25-year-old Spanish singer Rosalía. Her first studio album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, also dropped on March 29, just weeks before she's due to perform at Coachella. She'll then kick off her international Summer tour, When We All Fall Asleep.

Whenever I tell people the first Billie Eilish song I ever heard was "COPYCAT," I'm met with confused looks since people typically attribute her breakthrough success to "Ocean Eyes." But I actually couldn't think of a better song to introduce me to her. It came on when I let my Spotify radio play while I was getting ready for class during Fall 2017. As soon as I heard the slow, ominous opening, I stopped and listened. I hung on to every word in the intro. And when the beat dropped, it was over — I was a stan.
Evidently, that led me down the path of Eilish, and I took a deep dive into her music. "COPYCAT" is definitely distinguishable from her typical sound: slow, subdued, wispy. But I ended up falling in love with her other jams. "Idontwannabeyouanymore" and its message of struggling with insecurities particularly hit me hard. It's quite the opposite of "COPYCAT," but it shows how you can have a dichotomous outlook on your own self-esteem. One day, you're loving yourself, and the next, you can barely stand the thought of being in your own skin.
Eilish is able to express all of these different emotions so vividly and visually through her music. And she manages to do so without being tied down to any specific genre. Whether you're feeling low, on top of the world, like you're over relationships, or maybe a little psychotic, there's a Billie Eilish song that probably describes what you're going through. Keep scrolling to listen to some of her best works!

Facts About Billie Eilish Part 2

Billie's been open about having Tourette Syndrome.

As Billie started gaining more exposure for her music, people started creating and uploading compilation videos of what they believed to be Billie's physical tics related to Tourette Syndrome. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, Tourette Syndrome is a neurological disorder that's characterized by involuntary movements and vocalizations known as tics. The compilation videos moved Billie to open up about her experience living with the disorder in her own Instagram stories, but she also talked about her experience while visiting Ellen. Billie said opening up about the disorder has helped her better connect with fans. "I think I also really learned that a lot of my fans have it, which made me feel kind of more at home with saying it, and also I felt like there was a connection there," she said.

Billie's a Belieber.

Billie has been open about being in love with Justin Bieber since she was about 12. "That was like my first love. That was the person I was in love with, in my head he was in love with me, it was like a relationship with a person," Billie said about Justin in a radio interview with KROQ.
She met him for the first time at Coachella and the moment was as cute as you probably imagined it to be.

Billie's obsessed with The Office.

Billie's made it clear that The Office is her favorite show of all time. She even used samples from the episode "Threat Level Midnight" in her song, "My Strange Addiction." Billie's been vocal about issues she cares about.

In 2018, she appeared in a campaign with the mayor of Los Angeles to try to get young people to register to vote. "As young people we have to own and use our power to make a difference. When we go into the voting booth, it's about deciding who will lead America into the future," she said in the Facebook ad.
Billie's also been vocal about the U.S. changing abortion laws, saying women should have the choice to do whatever they want with their bodies. "Women should say, should do, and feel, and be exactly what they want. There should be nobody else telling them how to live their life, how to do shit. It just makes me so mad that if I start talking about it, I won’t stop. Men should not make women’s choices — that’s all I have to say," she told Variety during the ASCAP Pop Music Awards.

Facts About Billie Eilish

It seems like Billie Eilish just exploded onto the music scene, but she's already taking over it. 2019 isn't even halfway through and it's probably been her best year yet. In April, she turnt up the stage at Coachella, she recently starred in a Calvin Klein campaign and her debut album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? reached the number one spot on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. We're just getting to know Billie, but she's already opened up about so much regarding her music and personal life. Here's everything you need to know about rising pop star, Billie Eilish.

1. She released her debut album in March 2019.

Her debut album When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? made her the first artist born in the 2000s to have a number one album in the United States, according to CNN. She's also the youngest female artist ever to have a number 1 album in the UK.

2. Billie's been writing music since she was 11.

Billie told Vogue that she was a member of the Los Angeles Children's Choir. She said her time in the choir is what helped her develop her singing skills. "It’s [the choir] helped me learn the proper way to sing and not ruin my voice completely. But I’ve just always sung, all the time. I sang so much that my family had to shush me." She said singing naturally led to her writing music.

3. Billie originally recorded the song "Ocean Eyes" for the dance company she used to be a part of.

Billie's brother, Finneas, wrote the song in 2015 and Billie decided to sing it. The song compares falling in love to feeling like you're falling off of a cliff. Billie originally recorded the song so that her dance teacher could choreograph a contemporary dance to it, but the siblings liked the song so much that they ended up uploading it to SoundCloud. On Soundcloud, the song started gaining traction and attention from record labels to buy the rights for the song.

4. Billie's brother, Finneas, helps her make her music.

Finneas helps Billie writer her music and produces her songs. He produced all 14 tracks on When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?. Finneas talked to Atwood Magazine about his experience writing music for Billie saying, "Well for Billie, if I’m writing a song alone for Billie like “Ocean Eyes” or “watch” or “Six Feet Under,” I want to write a song that I think she’ll relate to and enjoy singing and empathize with the lyrics and make her own. And if I’m writing a song with Billie, I’m just trying to help her tell whatever story she’s trying to tell, bounce ideas off of her, listen to her ideas."
Billie also spoke about her experience working with her brother and said they have great give and take. “There’s so much time wasted working with people you don’t know, where if you don’t like something, you’re like: ‘You could, maybe, I don’t know, maybe try something where it’s a little different.’ Whereas, with Finneas it’s just like, ‘No, that sucks, let’s move on.’ We just know each other so we can do that," she told Clash.

5. Billie's know for her streetwear-like style.

Billie's known for wearing a lot of baggy clothes and track suits. She described her personal style as being pretty weird to Harper's Bazaar. But Billie also said that the reason she wears baggy clothes is so that people won't be able to judge her. She opened up about her style choices in her campaign ad for Calvin Klein saying, “Nobody can have an opinion because they haven’t seen what’s underneath. Nobody can be like, ‘she’s slim-thick,’ ‘she’s not slim-thick,’ ‘she’s got a flat a**,’ ‘she’s got a fat a**.’ No one can say any of that because they don’t know," she said.

Billie also has notably strange eyes. I can't ever remember meeting anyone with eyes like that. Billie dresses in a decidedly down-tempo ‘isn't what you would describe as a beauty queen’ purposeful style. I very much dread her 18th birthday because they (her handlers) will immediately begin trying to sexualize her. That is all wrong. From a creative perspective she does not need it to be a hit. She already is one and without the Britney Spears plaid skirt/schoolgirl porno look. Don't get me wrong - I love Brittany Spears as someone that I like looking at and that I want to fuck. Not as an artist though. I could never take her seriously.
Billie is fine as she is. I don't want her to be sexy I just want her to keep writing this kind of strange stuff she's been doing.
Do it Billie! Don't go changin’

Reasons Why Were Losing Our Mind On Billie Eilish

5 Reasons Why We're Losing Our Minds Over Billie Eilish
1. Age Ain't Nothing But A Number…But Wait…She's 16?
Billie Eillish hates when people ask her age…but seriously, it's hard to tell. The only time she really gave away her age was when she admitted that she thought Bill and Hillary Clinton were brother and sister. This girl has good genes…the genes where you just never go through that awkward ugly chubby phase. She said in an interview once that she did the thing at the fair where they guess your age, and they guessed 20 and she was like, "actually I'm 12". It's hard not to be obsessed with the fact that she's 16 and has more swag and style than all of us combined. Maybe we feel like we can relive our youth by investing ourselves into her life? Because if we could go back to 16 years old and be anyone but ourselves, we pick Billie Eilish. 16 years old with an acclaimed debut EP, nearly sold-out tour, and millions of monthly streams on Spotify. Meanwhile at 16 we were just writing answers on the palm of our hand trying to pass the AP exam.

2. She's Got A Dark Vibe

It's like she was taken straight out of The Conjuring or some bad horror movie like that. She has said multiple times in interviews that she hates smiling. In fact, her debut EP is called don't smile at me…and we kind of love that. For 16, she's pretty insightful into societal norms, like, feeling obligated to smile back at someone in passing on the street to be polite. Well she's not about that life…Billie Eilish might make smiling not cool. Smiling is so last year. Get ready for angry selfies on Instagram. She's been featured in Vogue, Galore, Vanity Fair and more…and guess what, she's glaring in every photo, looking slightly possessed. We have a thing for people that are always gloomy….just look at The Weeknd. Billie Eilish just isn't your typical sweet and girly teenage pop star…one of her hit songs, "Bellyache" is about murdering her friends. Oh, and she tweets things like "I'm obsessed with pain".

3. Sibling Love
She's proof that older brothers can in fact be caring and supportive…must be nice. Her older brother Finneas is her partner in crime, as they've co-written a lot of songs and recorded most of her EP in his bedroom. My older brother was either in his room with the door locked playing video games or trying to shoot me with a paintball gun in the backyard…in case anyone was wondering.

4. She Treats Her Fans Like Humans
Billie has a radio show with her brother called "groupies have feelings too" on Beats 1 radio, where she plays her favorite songs and reiterates that all fans have feelings. She has said that she doesn't just want to take photos with her fans. She wants to talk with them and know how their day went or what they had for breakfast. Oh, and if you ever attend a Billie Eilish concert, be prepared for moms and middle schoolers front row screaming and crying, because all ages can attend.

5. The Khalid Collab
Who is the world also obsessed with lately? Khalid. Who did Billie recently collab with? You guessed it, Khalid. Khalid is also known to go out of his way for his fans, so they're a good match. They both have unique voices that we havn't really ever heard, and a Khalid collab is just a recipe for success. And now I can't stop saying Khalid collab. Khalid collab Khalid collab Khalid collab Khalid collab Khalid collab Khalid collab. If you learned nothing about Billie Eilish after reading this, at least you came away with a good tongue twister.
